ARRANGING FOR Philip Theory

ARRANGING FOR Philip Theory

What The World Needs Now Is Love - HORLICK SINGERS VS DIONNE WARWICK

What The World Needs Now Is Love - HORLICK SINGERS
The arranger has decided to keep the tempo and rhythm the same as the original which is swing in 3/4.
The arranger took range into perspective, he made it convenient for a choir or inexperienced singers to sing this piece as the original was sung by a a female soprano, males would find it challenging to sing along to a deeper harmony was introduced for the male singers. The drum played a steady beat through the piece.

What The World Needs Now Is Love - DIONNE WARWICK

Dionne Warwick recorded harmony over the lead vocals.
the pianist plays the passing chords while the singers sing the melody.
I can understand where the arrange is coming from and I can appreciate his choices as the song has to fit the requirements of this type of genre and style. the singers were both male ad female so. there is an intro in the beginning of the song.

'The greatest love of all'  WHITNEY HUSTON vs  SCORE EDIT

Greatest Love Of All - Score Edit
The arranger has introduced dynamic markings into the piece to make up for the fact that there is no vocals to support the music, also the key signature has been changed in form the original as it would be easier for a beginner pianist  to follow the piece successfully. the use of crochets and minims and rest are basic pianist knowledge and also the chords are simple, as there were no vocals to accompany the music. There is also an intro decided by arranger it suites the classical genre very well. The arranger took into account all these aspects as he wasn't to put his own twist in the piece. Whitney Huston convey emotion such as anger the piece bet there is no way if knowing as there are very few dynamic markings

Greatest Love Of All - Whitney Houston

The piano in this piece is very bright and jovial almost sounds dream , kind of fantasy. The arranger as used a soul singer  so the power and pain of her voice can be heard, this song is lyrically driven the piano is very minimal as the piano small section of the melody. the drum is played straight there is reverb on the bass drum also correlated to the dream like feel. there is a convention pop melody as this genre is a popular music genre, The arranger has used harmonies in this song to support the main vocal as it add emphasis to the main vocals. The arranger has created this piece to fit in the pop chars and sell loads of copies.

We three kings-KAMELOT VS VALLANCIO VS ELLA FITZGERALD
The original is a beautiful piece, known by the majority of the population as it is festive.

Kamelot
I can understand where the arrange is coming from and I can appreciate his choices as the song has to fit the requirements of this type of genre; the metal cover consisted of electric guitar with distortion and a solo there was also riffing over the piece. The Melody was clear and so the song was recognisable. There is a long interesting intro which settled the scene almost like a foreshadow of what was to come. There were many guitar riffs as there was no vocals to back up the piece the arranger had to become creative. There is a little interval where this the tempo and the mood totally changed this was very convenient as the song couldn't possibly succeeded by just doing so all the way through .The B section was tabbed  with an acoustic guitar and the scene is very Christmassy as to the metal loud aggressiveness and gracefully returns to the distorted guitar. I am positive that the arranger knew exactly what when the wanted creating the piece in this specific way.

Villancio

The arranger has kept the main melody and transformed the piece in his own desired image by immediately  by introducing a horn intro which was played beautifully it was adagio and settling. This choir is made up of male singers so the arranger has taking range into account as there are only male performers so the vocals are ranging from (baritone, tenor, alto) the Harmony is very tight. The song of the recording is very beautiful one can feel and here the reverberation the song was recorded In a church or cathedral this is very common in Gospel, church music.i  can really appreciate the arranging and understand the concept and how well it works. There was very little accompaniment

Ella Fitzgerald

This arrangement feels up beat only by the accompaniment the song as it is swung gives the effect of urgency and speed, the unusual sound of the harp really gives the bouncy christmassy, festive, jovial feel to the piece. The bass is very prominent, the piano is playing 7th chords it brings a bluesy feel to the song, the backing vocals are dream like and the arranger really though about is as harps are associated to dreams so this is ht prefect arrangement for style of song

Microphones

Microphones!!!

Three main polar patterns found on microphones

A polar pattern determines which directions a microphone will receive audio from.

Cardioid- The cardioid polar pattern is highly directional, meaning it is best used when looking to focus in on a particular source with the least amount of outside noise.  It is designed to pick up sound from the front of the microphone, where the LED is located.  It will also pick up some sounds from just outside the opposite end of the microphone but the signal will not be nearly as strong as the front of the microphone.  If you’re looking to isolate a certain performer, it is recommended you use this pattern.

Cardoid
Bidirectional  The figure-8 polar pattern has a bidirectional polar pattern designed after its namesake, and this allows for equal amounts of signal to be picked up from in front of, and behind the microphone. This is great when looking to record two speakers at once, or if you’re looking to pick up great directional sound, as well as some light reflected sounds like reverb and room noise, while still blocking out audio from the sides of the microphone. - A 'figure-8' pattern where sound is picked up equally well from two opposing directions, without sensitivity at the sides (as illustrated in Fig 5).This type of microphone may be useful in an interview situation.
 BiDirectional

Omnidirectional - The omni polar pattern picks up audio from all around the microphone making it great for conference recording, heavy reflected sounds, and for getting the best ambient sounds out of your recording. It will pick up a live band, as well as the audience, giving live recordings a strong sense of authenticity. The omni polar pattern is the best choice as it is versatile it records anything
OmniDirectional

Types of microphone used in the studio

Dynamic microphones  are commonly used in live recording, the most popular is the SHURE SM58 which retails at £100.00.  In a dynamic microphone, the diaphragm moves a coil between two magnets (positive and negative) when sound waves hit it, the movement creates a small current which picks up the audio.

Condenser microphone has been around for more than a century, and requires an external voltage (phantom power). A capacitor is created by the diaphragm and a back plate, they are electrically charged and the movement of the diaphragm in relation to the back plate causes a varying capacitance, in turn varying the voltage output. so when recording phantom power is required

Carbon Microphones The oldest and simplest microphone uses carbon dust. This is the technology used in the first telephones and is still used in some telephones today. The carbon dust has a thin metal or plastic diaphragm on one side. As sound waves hit the diaphragm, they compress the carbon dust, which changes its resistance. By running a current through the carbon, the changing resistance changes the amount of current that flows.

Ribbon Microphones  in a ribbon microphone, a thin ribbon usually aluminium, duraluminum or nanofilm  is suspended in a magnetic field. Sound waves move the ribbon, which changes the current flowing through it. Ribbon microphones are bidirectional meaning they pick up sounds from both sides of the mic.

Electret Microphone
Electret microphones are among the most widely used microphones on Earth because they're cheap and relatively simple, electret mics are used in cell phones , computers and hands-free headsets. An electret microphone is a type of condenser microphone in which the external charge is replaced with an electret material.

Fiber Optic Microphone
Fiber-optic systems, which use super-thin strands of glass to transmit information instead of traditional metal wires, have been revolutionising the field of telecommunications in recent years, including microphone technology. So what's the big deal? Unlike conventional mics, which are often big and send an electrical signal, fibre optic microphones can be extremely small, and they can be used in electrically sensitive environments. They can also be produced with no metal, which makes them very useful in magnetic resonance imaging applications and other situations where radio frequency interference is an issue
The following microphones can be used for..

The Audix D6 microphone is a dynamic microphone,The D6 is a cardioid dynamic microphone it is used for recording kick drum as it has an aggressively tailored frequency response.

The SE Electronics Titan is a condenser microphone is a omni direction microphone, it is used for recording any sounds as it collect audio from all directions this microphone is great for recording vocals in a studio as it captures clarity in the singers voice, This translates into clear high frequencies with less distortion and a tighter low frequency response.
The Microtech Gefell M300 is a condenser microphone, it has cardioid pattern it has a very small diaphragm, it is very compact looks like a pencil. this powerful microphone is used for recording vocals and also musical instruments such as acoustic guitar, the mic gives a clean, balanced audio recording

Per-Amp
The preamp is the signal processing part of an amplifier. This means it's the section of the amp that allows you to plug in sources such as tuner and CD player. It's also the section that allows you to change volume and possibly to change treble and bass settings. On a professional per-amp i would expect to find features such as a gain control, a VU meter and phantom power to power condenser microphone.
