ARRANGING FOR Philip Theory

ARRANGING FOR Philip Theory

What The World Needs Now Is Love - HORLICK SINGERS VS DIONNE WARWICK

What The World Needs Now Is Love - HORLICK SINGERS
The arranger has decided to keep the tempo and rhythm the same as the original which is swing in 3/4.
The arranger took range into perspective, he made it convenient for a choir or inexperienced singers to sing this piece as the original was sung by a a female soprano, males would find it challenging to sing along to a deeper harmony was introduced for the male singers. The drum played a steady beat through the piece.

What The World Needs Now Is Love - DIONNE WARWICK

Dionne Warwick recorded harmony over the lead vocals.
the pianist plays the passing chords while the singers sing the melody.
I can understand where the arrange is coming from and I can appreciate his choices as the song has to fit the requirements of this type of genre and style. the singers were both male ad female so. there is an intro in the beginning of the song.

'The greatest love of all'  WHITNEY HUSTON vs  SCORE EDIT

Greatest Love Of All - Score Edit
The arranger has introduced dynamic markings into the piece to make up for the fact that there is no vocals to support the music, also the key signature has been changed in form the original as it would be easier for a beginner pianist  to follow the piece successfully. the use of crochets and minims and rest are basic pianist knowledge and also the chords are simple, as there were no vocals to accompany the music. There is also an intro decided by arranger it suites the classical genre very well. The arranger took into account all these aspects as he wasn't to put his own twist in the piece. Whitney Huston convey emotion such as anger the piece bet there is no way if knowing as there are very few dynamic markings

Greatest Love Of All - Whitney Houston

The piano in this piece is very bright and jovial almost sounds dream , kind of fantasy. The arranger as used a soul singer  so the power and pain of her voice can be heard, this song is lyrically driven the piano is very minimal as the piano small section of the melody. the drum is played straight there is reverb on the bass drum also correlated to the dream like feel. there is a convention pop melody as this genre is a popular music genre, The arranger has used harmonies in this song to support the main vocal as it add emphasis to the main vocals. The arranger has created this piece to fit in the pop chars and sell loads of copies.

We three kings-KAMELOT VS VALLANCIO VS ELLA FITZGERALD
The original is a beautiful piece, known by the majority of the population as it is festive.

Kamelot
I can understand where the arrange is coming from and I can appreciate his choices as the song has to fit the requirements of this type of genre; the metal cover consisted of electric guitar with distortion and a solo there was also riffing over the piece. The Melody was clear and so the song was recognisable. There is a long interesting intro which settled the scene almost like a foreshadow of what was to come. There were many guitar riffs as there was no vocals to back up the piece the arranger had to become creative. There is a little interval where this the tempo and the mood totally changed this was very convenient as the song couldn't possibly succeeded by just doing so all the way through .The B section was tabbed  with an acoustic guitar and the scene is very Christmassy as to the metal loud aggressiveness and gracefully returns to the distorted guitar. I am positive that the arranger knew exactly what when the wanted creating the piece in this specific way.

Villancio

The arranger has kept the main melody and transformed the piece in his own desired image by immediately  by introducing a horn intro which was played beautifully it was adagio and settling. This choir is made up of male singers so the arranger has taking range into account as there are only male performers so the vocals are ranging from (baritone, tenor, alto) the Harmony is very tight. The song of the recording is very beautiful one can feel and here the reverberation the song was recorded In a church or cathedral this is very common in Gospel, church music.i  can really appreciate the arranging and understand the concept and how well it works. There was very little accompaniment

Ella Fitzgerald

This arrangement feels up beat only by the accompaniment the song as it is swung gives the effect of urgency and speed, the unusual sound of the harp really gives the bouncy christmassy, festive, jovial feel to the piece. The bass is very prominent, the piano is playing 7th chords it brings a bluesy feel to the song, the backing vocals are dream like and the arranger really though about is as harps are associated to dreams so this is ht prefect arrangement for style of song

Microphones

Microphones!!!

Three main polar patterns found on microphones

A polar pattern determines which directions a microphone will receive audio from.

Cardioid- The cardioid polar pattern is highly directional, meaning it is best used when looking to focus in on a particular source with the least amount of outside noise.  It is designed to pick up sound from the front of the microphone, where the LED is located.  It will also pick up some sounds from just outside the opposite end of the microphone but the signal will not be nearly as strong as the front of the microphone.  If you’re looking to isolate a certain performer, it is recommended you use this pattern.

Cardoid
Bidirectional  The figure-8 polar pattern has a bidirectional polar pattern designed after its namesake, and this allows for equal amounts of signal to be picked up from in front of, and behind the microphone. This is great when looking to record two speakers at once, or if you’re looking to pick up great directional sound, as well as some light reflected sounds like reverb and room noise, while still blocking out audio from the sides of the microphone. - A 'figure-8' pattern where sound is picked up equally well from two opposing directions, without sensitivity at the sides (as illustrated in Fig 5).This type of microphone may be useful in an interview situation.
 BiDirectional

Omnidirectional - The omni polar pattern picks up audio from all around the microphone making it great for conference recording, heavy reflected sounds, and for getting the best ambient sounds out of your recording. It will pick up a live band, as well as the audience, giving live recordings a strong sense of authenticity. The omni polar pattern is the best choice as it is versatile it records anything
OmniDirectional

Types of microphone used in the studio

Dynamic microphones  are commonly used in live recording, the most popular is the SHURE SM58 which retails at £100.00.  In a dynamic microphone, the diaphragm moves a coil between two magnets (positive and negative) when sound waves hit it, the movement creates a small current which picks up the audio.

Condenser microphone has been around for more than a century, and requires an external voltage (phantom power). A capacitor is created by the diaphragm and a back plate, they are electrically charged and the movement of the diaphragm in relation to the back plate causes a varying capacitance, in turn varying the voltage output. so when recording phantom power is required

Carbon Microphones The oldest and simplest microphone uses carbon dust. This is the technology used in the first telephones and is still used in some telephones today. The carbon dust has a thin metal or plastic diaphragm on one side. As sound waves hit the diaphragm, they compress the carbon dust, which changes its resistance. By running a current through the carbon, the changing resistance changes the amount of current that flows.

Ribbon Microphones  in a ribbon microphone, a thin ribbon usually aluminium, duraluminum or nanofilm  is suspended in a magnetic field. Sound waves move the ribbon, which changes the current flowing through it. Ribbon microphones are bidirectional meaning they pick up sounds from both sides of the mic.

Electret Microphone
Electret microphones are among the most widely used microphones on Earth because they're cheap and relatively simple, electret mics are used in cell phones , computers and hands-free headsets. An electret microphone is a type of condenser microphone in which the external charge is replaced with an electret material.

Fiber Optic Microphone
Fiber-optic systems, which use super-thin strands of glass to transmit information instead of traditional metal wires, have been revolutionising the field of telecommunications in recent years, including microphone technology. So what's the big deal? Unlike conventional mics, which are often big and send an electrical signal, fibre optic microphones can be extremely small, and they can be used in electrically sensitive environments. They can also be produced with no metal, which makes them very useful in magnetic resonance imaging applications and other situations where radio frequency interference is an issue
The following microphones can be used for..

The Audix D6 microphone is a dynamic microphone,The D6 is a cardioid dynamic microphone it is used for recording kick drum as it has an aggressively tailored frequency response.

The SE Electronics Titan is a condenser microphone is a omni direction microphone, it is used for recording any sounds as it collect audio from all directions this microphone is great for recording vocals in a studio as it captures clarity in the singers voice, This translates into clear high frequencies with less distortion and a tighter low frequency response.
The Microtech Gefell M300 is a condenser microphone, it has cardioid pattern it has a very small diaphragm, it is very compact looks like a pencil. this powerful microphone is used for recording vocals and also musical instruments such as acoustic guitar, the mic gives a clean, balanced audio recording

Per-Amp
The preamp is the signal processing part of an amplifier. This means it's the section of the amp that allows you to plug in sources such as tuner and CD player. It's also the section that allows you to change volume and possibly to change treble and bass settings. On a professional per-amp i would expect to find features such as a gain control, a VU meter and phantom power to power condenser microphone.

Band workshop

'KISS ON' was chosen on 09/11/12 in performance class to be performed with a live band.
Half of the class performed my song it was a great and rare experience which i thoroughly enjoyed.
Band
Amber did an amazing job on drums holding down the tempo and being creative and spontaneous.
Shevelle held down the skank on the keyboards and also accompanied me and Bea with the vocals.
John was feeling the bass and a played very well according to the genre.
Bea's vocal harmony was great, she really understood and the lyrics and sung with conviction.
I played acoustic guitar and lead vocals.

Originally 'kiss on' was written and sung as a folk song but things change, the genre changed during the workshop to more of a reggae feel appose to folk, this was surprising but it worked very well and the audience seemed to enjoy it.I used a capo on the acoustic guitar and I used a foot-switch in the for the bridge. As a whole it was a great ensemble and the instrumentalists and singers really supported me and played very well.

My Solo Repertoire

My Solo Repertoire

My name is Christina Harris. I have combined  a number of pieces which will best suit  and show off  my vocals, guitar drums and keyboard skills. My solo performance repertoire will be 1 hour long and consists of a archive of covers and original songs I derive pleasure from. I enjoy listening to a vast range of genre of music e.g folk, rock, metal, reggae, jazz  and alternative Indie music as they are edgy and not following the repetitive conventional pop melody, time signature and song structure. These songs are of varying styles and each shows off different electric guitar, vocals, keyboard and drum playing techniques. Some songs are mainly vocals and some mainly rhythm, this allows me to show that I can play in many positions. A number songs are simple and some are complex so it keeps me on my toes and the audience entertained.

Alt-J - Tessellate (Guitar and vocals)
Alt is an indie pop, alternative band they released the album called ‘An awesome wave’ written by the band and released in 2012.  The band have been active since 2007 till the present, members meet in university in Cambridge, England and  and have been active ever since, they are currently  signed to infectious, canvasback music records.
I have chosen to add this song into my repertoire because it will amplify my vocal range and show off they techniques and and this song has many contrasting dynamics and an interesting mellow 2\4 tempo. The song is space as there are many stops , musically is is not very chordal it is plucky and relaxing although the drum is playing syncopated rim shot beats grooves.
The instrument consists of: Synthesiser keyboard, percussion: drum kit and bongo drums, electric guitar and electric bass.

Lana Del Rey - This is what makes us girls (vocals and piano)
Lana Del Rey is a pop singer, Lana's singing career have been active since 2005 till present she has changed her name many times and her image to fit into the pop culture, 'born to die' was her 1st official album which was released in 2012 and have been big success. Lana's currently signed to inter scope records.

'This is what makes us girls
We all look for heaven and we put our love first
Something' that we'd die for, it's our curse'

This song is about how young girls subconsciously put love first when is confronted with emotions and do not fear the consequences of bad mistakes which often have a connection with the opposite sex.I enjoy her music cause it is very sensual and her lyrics are often explicit and real, it what the people want to hear. I believe that this song suits my voice as i con  add the required emotion to it and tell it story.
The instrumental consists of: Arco violin,  keyboard, percussion: distortion and reverb drum kit, electric guitar and electric bass, A found sound unrecognised sound, back up vocals and a lead vocal.

Christina Harris- Kiss on (Acoustic guitar and Vocals)
'kiss on' was written on a acoustic guitar in lordship lane recreational park and is based on the love of my boyfriend. There is contrasting lyrics the verses are mellow as it accelerates the bridge gets very violent and heated as relations have their ups and down it is stated in the lyrics. The strum pattern progresses through out the piece.

'kiss on, piss off
all the bets are off all the bets are off
I'm gone in his arm
cause that's where I belong
psycho but I know he's the one'

In this verse there is never ending playing on words and oxymoron as 2 contrasting emotions are being conveyed this then creates imagery in the listeners mind. This is exactly what i am aiming for, I want my listeners to think about the lyric even though it might not necessarily putting out a strong political message but it triggering off emotions in the audience and making  them ponder and at the same time puzzle the
The instrument consists of: keyboard playing light chord, percussion: drum kit and tambourine, acoustic guitar and double bass.

Christina Harris - Come down  (Guitar and Vocal)
'come down' was composed on logic with a midi keyboard on march 2012 and was written in my home in Tottenham whilst playing chords on the electric guitar with a capo in the 3rd fret as the song is in Cm. very simple Chords are used, as i would like to think that my song were lyrically driven  as the likes of Laura marlin, Nina Simone and Gil Scott Heron. There is not a consistent strum pattern, the guitar is plucked with the finger this puking technique then accelerates and crescendo's at the appropriate sections in the song making it contrasting ans dynamically appealing

'I was dead but alive,
I really did try,
you were constantly high
and denying your mine'

'Come down from your high horse I'm tired
and run into my arms'

The concept of this song is to create an illusion of a hurting woman being abused by her lover. She is pleading for his love  even though she has tried to be faithful to him and sustain a good relationship as his loving wife. subconsciously we fall on the side of the supposedly 'poor' lady, who is not getting no affection form his lover, with No question asked. this is all due to the imagery i have created by the choice of words i have used. But there is a build up to a twist

'By the look in his eyes
I know it was time
I told him baby never mind
but he wanted out my life'

The second verse goes on to explain pain in the mans eyes and his perspective as he tells his side story, as she is now the villan, this follows the sudden dynamic change in the piece to a more strumy, panting, fast pace to it. I have carefully added this into repertoire because it will show of my song writing techniques and guitar control.

Dolie smith - Cruella De ville-(Drums)
'Cruella De ville'  is a jazz piece, it first appearance was in the Disney play one hundred and one dalmatian in 1956, the film was a big success in the written my Dolie smith a great English novelist and playwright.
This piece is swung in triplets and is very sparse and airy. I chose this song as you can loos you self in the piece as it is so smooth. Techniques used in the rum kit is syncopation on the snare rims, while the ride symbol plays a triplet groove (1 trip-let 2 trip-let 3 trip-let 4 trip-let) and is accented on the first beat. brushes are used to give it a light reel. through out the song the high hat is constantly been opened on on the first beat of the bar. this piece is beat played in an orchestra but dot my recital all i will require is a clear backing track.

System of a Down- Toxicity (Drums)
System of a down a metal band also known as 'SOAD' they have been active since 1994 to 2006 releasing 6 albums and unfortunately split up and  broke up resurrected in 2011 and is currently working on an album.
The song is played in 6/8 time signature and 125 Bpm. It is metal piece so strong wooden sticks or aluminium drum sticks would be advisable as the song is very fast and the entire drum kit is being used up so strength should be at optimum, also timing is important in this piece

'Eating seeds is a pastime activity,
The toxicity of our city, of our city,

no, what do you own the world?

How do you own disorder, disorder,'

This band has many political references they hold string vied about political and this is their way of unavailing the 'truth' to the people in the way most convenient tho they which is  through their music. this song was recorded in Cello Studios in March – July 2001 in Glendale, California, united states of America  and was officially released in September of that year on their 'Toxicity' album and sold millions of copies worldwide.

Christina Harris - when its all over (Acoustic Guitar and Vocal)
'when its all over' was written and composed by me in London in 2012.i have used a lot of metaphors and rhyming to get my point across in this song. The song is in 4/4, and is the key of Bm and it is played straight with a adejio tempo verse and a contrasting chorus, subtle yet fuerte . The song is about a keen boyfriend trying to sneak kisses to his girlfriend, she IS constantly rejecting them even in the most perfect of settings/places. The instrumental although mostly simple is the Bar chords and a sweep pick solo for the bridge this the reason I chose this song as it shows off my guitar technique.

Christina Harris - Heart-block (Guitar and Vocals)
'heart-block' was written in may 2012 at garden party in Bristol. i was instantly motivated as i i was going through a hard time. I decided to write about this tough period of time. this song has many song writing techniques. it uses the the minor key and moves to the harmonic minor for the bridge. the chord change i very frequent yet it is not over powering. I like to use interesting word play in my own music vocally and musically as it adds diversity and contrasting emotions and imagery and the listeners mind.

'Fell in love with u in a second
and my heart went STOP!
another heart-string pop
my love for you goes beyond my ticky tock'

I have decided to include this song into my repertoire as it has lots of interesting song writing techniques such as metaphors ,similes , play on words and catchy puns. This song has a calm tone to it and a it played in staccato.

Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (vocals and piano)
'master blaster' is a reggae piece that was written and composed by Stevie wonder while in was in the united state of America, the song was finally released in 1980. Stevie's Occupations consists of being a talented singer-songwriter, multi instrumentalists, reorder producer and activist.
This song was a tribute to reggae legend bob Marley and used a lot of cultural references to get its meaning across. the song has a swung feel and it  uses a skank ans a melodic bass line, all typical features of reggae. I have chosen to add this song in my solo repertoire it used specific reggae technique like the skank and the pentatonic scale, which would like to demonstrate  my ability ti play using this song

This is a short extract from 'kiss on' by Christina Harris

Sunday, 7 October 2012

My name is Christina Harris.
I will be giving an account of the song I will be performing in my 20 min solo repertoire.
This recital will consist of songs that I’m passionate about and songs I have written. I have combined a number of pieces which will best suit my voice and show off my vocals the most.
